STAR TREK: TNG “SELAYAN SSESTAR COSTUME” FROM “LONELY AMONG US”

Record summary

An elaborate costume featured in the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode “Lonely Among Us”; wherein the “Enterprise-D” receives a delegation of alien dignitaries who share a weighty animosity. This costume is that of the head of the reptilian Selayan delegation “Ssestar” (John Durbin), it consists of a full-length, pumpkin-colored robe featuring an abstract, black, floral pattern, black straps that go over the shoulders, unattached, matching sleeves, a beautiful, attached robe in a gold, faux reptile skin pattern that flows down from the chest and covers the lower body. The black straps on the inner robe are covered by a wonderfully elaborate full-length cape that consists of all manner of shapes in reflective gold and almost every shade of orange and brown that ends in a ‘tail’ in the back; a large, decorative, metal clasp on the front that secures with several smaller clasps on the inside. Included are a pair of ankle boots with the lower portion painted in the pumpkin color as the robe and a pair of rubber ‘hands’ molded into a reptilian form featuring textured, scale detail, painted an appropriate green color, and complete with separately painted ‘claws’. A sewn in tag in the pumpkin-colored robe and the cape both read ‘John Durbin’ and the bag that the ‘hands’ are in features a label that reads ‘Ssestar’. This costume is one of a kind and no further examples of it are expected to be found.
