Record summary
A special effects costume lot featured in the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode “Broken Link” for wear by Rene Auberjonois in his portrayal of a very ill “Odo”. The costume is a pair of mustard colored Bajoran security officer uniform tops and one set of trousers, with a pair of boots, and a selection of special effects make up applications. Due to events in the episode, the costume pieces are covered in special effects make-up in a successful attempt to make the wearer look as though he were ‘melting’. The make-up is foam rubber painted to match the uniform with a sheen added to create the illusion of wetness. The trousers feature a sewn in Deep Space Nine tag reading ‘Rene Auberjonois’ and are covered in the effect from just below where a uniform jacket hangs to just above where uniform boots rise in the shins, the ankles of the trousers have specialized stirrups that allow the front of the foot to come out of the cloth but leave the heel still inside. The first jacket is meant to represent an earlier stage in the illness of the character and is inscribed ‘40%’ inside with a sewn in Deep Space Nine tag and further inscriptions reading ‘Stage 1, 40%’. Due to time and storage conditions the effect make-up in the jacket depicts a degree of damage that is shared by all of the costume uniform: some of the effect has peeled off, some of it has torn away from the fabric entirely but still hangs thus revealing the foam construction element, and original protective plastic wrap had adhered irreversibly to sections of the effect. The second jacket is meant to show a further decay in the character and is inscribed ‘60% Stage 2’ inside with all the same decay. The jackets both feature metal Bajoran combadges and zip up the spine. The boots were located separately of the lot but are included for a more complete item. The lot also features a selection of special effects pieces either for application to the actor or for touch up of the costume. Twelve variously sized, similarly colored items meant to represent a decay of the character are present. The costumer’s tags read ‘DS9 Odo, Rene Auberjonois, 1 uniform jacket w/ dripped rubber (distressed)’, the other costumer’s tag is nearly identical in that it includes ‘pant’ referencing the trousers, the third indicated it’s original position in the original inventory.
